Early Highlights 2009-2010

Innovative, free pro-social activities during and after school hours have been implemented at West Mesa Highland and Rio Grande High Schools.

The Brief Family Counseling Program has been expanded to 2 more clusters (28 schools).

A total of 3,007 unique students received school-based mental health services from APS Brief Family Counselors and Community Mental Health Providers during the 2008-09 school year. This represents an increase of 32% from baseline, much higher and earlier than the target of 8%.

Project Success/Crossroads Counselors provided services to high-risk students in ten (10) high schools to prevent substance abuse. A total of 822 students received individual counseling, and 791 students participated in the Parent Involvement Program (PIP) with their parents or guardians.

Seven (7) Family and Community Liaison Specialists (FCLS) have provided training, coordination and coaching in parent involvement strategies, based on the Epstein Model, for staff and parents in 25 schools.

Two (2) Case Managers has been hired through a contract with Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Youth Services Center to assist youth transitioning back to school and assist parents/guardians in finding appropriate behavioral services in the community

The Bernalillo County Juvenile Probation and Parole office has provided gang awareness training for 350 students, staff, and parents.

Safety equipment has been purchased for SROs in 12 high schools.

School Safety Plans were updated and approved by NM Public Education Department for all APS schools by November 2009.

25 schools received technical assistance from the APS Health and Wellness Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) unit to improve school climate and academic outcomes, including a two-day training led by national experts.

One part-time Family Nurse Practitioner was hired in November 2009 and placed at Helen Cordero Primary School to provide screening for children age 0-5.

A total of 15 APS and City of Albuquerque early childhood staff have been trained in the Parents as Teachers home visitation model and Nurtured Heart approach.

An Early Childhood Strategic Plan has been finalized, outlining how early childhood services can evolve into an integrated system, and defining child and family outcomes that will result.
