Prevention Intervention Program for Youth (PIPY)
Prevention Intervention Program for Youth (PIPY)
The Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), Bernalillo County Youth Services Center (YSC), 2nd Judicial District Children’s Court, Juvenile Probation and Parole and local Community Resource Agencies are partnering within the collaborative framework of the Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative, to provide support and wraparound services for youth transitioning from the Youth Services Center and preventing at-risk youth from entering the juvenile justice system. This unique partnership, the Prevention/Intervention Program for Youth (PIPY), is designed to enhance infrastructure and community collaboration and provide APS schools and community with a more uniform approach to addressing the needs of youth experiencing a crisis.
There are three primary objectives:
- To provide support services for youth in detention that are transitioning back to their home schools;
- To identify youth at-risk before entering the juvenile justice system and provide appropriate intervention supports ;
- To build community collaboration and design a local referral process to increase access for students to appropriate behavioral health services in the community.
PIPY is designed to create a more formal communication and seamless referral system between YSC staff, APS school staff, and community service partners with the goal to reduce recidivism and prevent students from ever entering the Juvenile Justice System.
Partnerships will be enhanced through service agreements and MOUs with area mental health and social service providers to connect participating youth with identified wrap-around services.
Through these partnerships, we anticipate:
- Reducing recidivism and the number of detentions;
- Increasing support services for youth not currently receiving assistance;
- Increasing communication, services and support needed for youth released from detention;
- Improving the tracking and communication between, APS, YSC, Probation and Parole and the Court Systems and ;
- Diverting at-risk youth entirely by offering appropriate services.
